Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Spending the majority of his career in Toronto with the Blue Jays, George Bell is a three-time All-Star, with three consecutive Silver Slugger Awards garnered by the Dominican from 1985 to 1987. Fresh off an especially successful personal season in 1987 that witnessed both American League RBI-leader and MVP status, we have a photo-matched Blue Jays jersey that was worn by the superstar in 1988 during batting practice, with this desirable garment possibly seeing additional action in spring training games. A one-year style that features an embroidered Rawlings crest over the right sleeve, the “Set 1” jersey feature’s “Blue Jays” arching over the chest in white tackle twill, with a gorgeous multi-coloured blue jay emblem with embroidered detailing placed beneath. “11” appears over the verso in matching white tackle twill, with a Rawlings size “40” patch and 1988 set tag affixed over the inside front tail along with a second Rawlings label placed over the collar. Exhibiting no discernible game-wear and remaining in beautiful condition, we should note that the jersey was originally obtained directly from the Blue Jays. Regarding the photo-match, screen grabs from video of the Toronto at Detroit contest on June 16th, 1988 (Bell interviewed by Mart Adler in batting practice) have been matched to the noticeably thinner bottom area of the blue-coloured section of the “L” of “Blue” across the chest, with the rest of the spacing between the remaining letters larger and more uniform. It’s interesting to note that the jersey appears especially tight on Bell in the video, and when comparing his size (approx 6’1, 190 lbs) to that of the jersey, a more confined fit is appropriate. The video link has been provided below, and we should note that the video erroneously lists the incorrect date, with this game actually occurring on June 16th, 1988.
