Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
An accumulation of a whole lot of stuff(!) is up for grabs here and will have the new owner sifting and sorting and smiling and cursing! Admittedly, we’d say that some of it is destined for the dumpster, but through it all are numerous notable items that span decades. Seventeen 1948-52 Exhibit cards are low grade but without back damage. The Bentley brothers lead the lineup, with nine examples overall having white borders. Popular Shirriff coins are near sets but have been mounted. A ’60-61 assembly is pasted onto a wooden board, with three having gone missing; 20-Imlach, 101-Simmons and 111-Meissner, while ’61-62 coins are glued into/onto a big pressed cardboard affair and display better than their grubby/worn predecessors, with the paper insert of #62-Godfrey not present. Other material from the 1960s is glued into a scrapbook, led-off by 11 pictures clipped from General Mills cereal boxes in ’66-67 (seven all-stars, four Canadiens). There’s a little Weekend Magazine picture action and then hockey cards securely glued onto pages; 55 from ’66-67 and 39 from ’67-68 but with Orr, Hull and Howe nowhere to be found and a salvage job looking like a difficult endeavor. ....Now then, onto the thousands of cards, with most of the ones from the 1970s and ‘80s either in lousy shape or without much star power. With that said though, there are the following notables. Out of some 1500 (mostly from ’69-70 to ’88-89), there is a stack of ’74-75 O-Pee-Chees (100+) that stand out due to their rather sharp condition, with duplication, heavy at times. We spot three or four of Salming RC (three crease-free EX), Clarke, Sittler and Dionne, a couple John Davidson RCs and unmarked checklists (four #54s, although off-centered or miscut and one #311). The condition of most everything else is uninspiring, with however multiples (duplicates) of Orr and Howe (WHA), with Gordie’s autograph appearing on “The Howes” (creased) card from ’74-75. Twenty ’69-70 OPC 4-in-1 albums don’t include any in tiptop shape, with most of them partially filled. There’s a stack (complete set and extras) of 1985-86 7-Eleven credit card-like cards, with an OPC rookie card of John Vanbiesbrouck graded NM & by PSA. Cards from the late-‘80s include four Brett Hull OPC RCs and one Topps, with a few Joe Sakic RCs also present. A couple of thousand modern cards (’90-91 and up) include duplicates (2-3-4 or more) of ’90-91 Upper Deck rookie cards (Jagr x 4, Federov x 3, Bure x 2, etc), with five Lindros Score rookies also present. There’s not a whole lot to note among the post-2000 contingent but a couple standout; 2003-04 McDonald’s Pacific Patches Silver Marian Hossa (011/150 – BV $150) and 2005-06 Ultra Difference Makers Jerseys Alexander Ovechkin, with a Bobby Orr 2001-02 Upper Deck Legends Pieces of History Stick card exhibiting edge damage. ....Now then, there are numerous wax packs to tell you about but we are not offering them as unopened as they/some may have been opened and re-sealed. A ’73-74 OPC pack is the oldest, then it’s a mix of OPC and Topps packs from between ’77-78 and the early-‘90s. Seventeen ’83-84 packs are laying in a torn/tattered OPC display box. Miscellaneous wrappers are also present, including four OPC jobs (with tears) from Wayne Gretzky’s rookie card year, ’79-80. Four uncut ’90-91 OPC card sheets, some old tobacco cards depicting wrestlers and other miscellaneous cards complete the hoard – it’ll keep you busy for mucho time!
