Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

More than fifty rookie cards are featured in Topps' 1965 football card effort, but none is more important or valuable or coveted than that picturing New York Jets' quarterback Joe Namath. An iconic image graces the front of card #122, while the reverse includes "The quarterback from Alabama was called the greatest athlete to come out of college ranks in 1964". Legendary Alabama coach "Bear" Bryant called Namath "the greatest athlete I ever coached". Joe received pro baseball offers upon graduation from high school and reportedly wanted to sign with the Pirates and play baseball like his idol, Roberto Clemente, but opted for football to please his mother who wanted him to get a college education. With a slight diamond cut and with less-than-perfect side-to-side and top-to-bottom centering, this Namath RC has been been graded EX 5 by PSA. Re-holdering is a suggestion as a half-moon-like mark affects the upper region, just below "New York". Young and brash and delivering on his guarantee to lead the Jets to Super Bowl glory, the iconic star was dubbed "Broadway Joe".
