Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

As cigarette smokers were lighting up over one hundred years ago, Denton True "Cy" Young was establishing a record unmatched since, his 511 career wins extremely unlikely to ever be challenged. Toiling for mostly Cleveland and Boston clubs during his 22-year career, Young was in his final season when he was depicted on this 1911 Piedmont Cigarettes card. He tacked on three victories with the Cleveland "Naps" before finishing up with four more as a member of the Boston Rustlers. Gold-bordered specimen has been graded Good 2 by SGC and includes a curious, informative write-up on the reverse. It tells of his perfect game against the hard-hitting Athletics in 1904, his 500th win in 1910 and of Cy Young Day in Boston in 1908, concluding with, "He was presented with the entire receipts of the game, and more silverware and floral designs than he could carry". The high bidder will be pleased to carry off this captivating relic.
We should note moderate to heavy wear including some residue and scratches over both the front and reverse of the SGC holder.
