Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
From the largest strip card set and from one of the earliest comes one of the most valuable cards in the W514 issue, with Babe Ruth hailed as "Home Run King - New York "Yankees" A. L." on the front of card #2. With rounded corners and a piece of the upper right corner missing, this example received a mark of GOOD 2 from PSA. The red color of Ruth's long-sleeves beneath his uniform and the 1919-21 issue date get one to thinking. Ruth was indeed the American League home run champion with the Red Sox in 1919 when he clouted 29 homers (while still pitching in 17 games) and then exploded for 54 and then 59 in his first two years with the Yankees as an everyday outfielder. A Joe Jackson card is the lone one that out-values the Ruth in the 120-card W514 issue, one of the most highly-collected among strip card sets. Also included is a trimmed #49-Leslie Mann card, encapsulated and deemed authentic by the ACA firm.
