A riveting image of a young Joe DiMaggio and an intriguing recap of the young star's ascent to Major League stardom are offered here, with the 1939 Play Ball issue's write-up on the back beginning "Joe DiMaggio, regarded as the greatest outfielder in baseball today, began his baseball career as a shortstop with the San Francisco Seals..." It goes on to inform of Joe D.'s 206 hits and .346 batting average as a New York Yankee rookie in 1936 and of his home run title (46 dingers) the following season, when he scored a league-high 151 runs. Impressive numbers indeed, with DiMaggio already at 615 hits after his first three seasons and hitting .381(!) the season this card was produced. The second most important/valuable '39 Play Ball behind the Ted Williams rookie is DiMaggio's #26 card, with the offered example examined and graded EX 5 by PSA. The image is left of center, with minor soiling observed in the right border. With a "RC" designation at Beckett, the important early DiMaggio issue will enhance your Joltin' Joe/Play Ball stash.
We should note some residue along with a few scratches over both the front and reverse of the PSA holder.
