Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
More intrigue here from our consignor's splendid stash of Babe Ruth pieces, with a postage stamp-size "transfer" depicting the New York Yankees' superstar and encapsulated by PSA. Receiving an EX 5 assessment, the transfer reportedly originally came on a sheet of 25 which included 13 baseball players and nine boxers. Two ball players, Zach Wheat and Red Famer, were double-printed. All 13 baseball subjects, including Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Grover Alexander and Casey Stengel, were also featured in the W515 set, the graphics of the latter used in the transfer issue, but in reverse negative fashion so as to "transfer" onto another surface. PSA has only ever slabbed 23 Ruth transfers, with eight of those receiving qualifiers. Babe's numbers for 1923 included 41 homers, 131 RBIs, 170(!) walks and a .393 average.
