Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

The Great One times two equals a somewhat infrequent opportunity, with Wayne Gretzky Topps rookie cards comprising this delectable duo. Examined and encapsulated by PSA, the 1979-80 issues are a testament of how there's a fine line between grades and half-grades. A novice or intermediate collector would likely contend that the cards look almost the same, but the NM-MT 8 entry, with its four sharp corners, is indeed superior. Both cards have original bright vivid colors, while very light touches at the corners, (most notably lower left), sending the lesser card to EX-MT+ 6.5. The latter however has perfect centering. Light scuffs/scratches to both holders is to be aware of. Debuting in the World Hockey Association at age 17, like the cartoon on the back of card #18 informs, Wayne went on to pulverize the NHL record book following his 110-point pro debut with Indianapolis and Edmonton, leading the Oilers to the hockey pinnacle on four occasions and propelling his rookie cards to forever-in-demand status. Not one but two prizes are here for the taking.
As mentioned, there are some scuffs and scratches to both holders along with glue residue, with these minor defects more pronounced on the NM-MT holder.
