Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The Canada Starch Company’s response to its competitor’s popular “Bee Hive” photos in the mid-1930s were these pictures, known as Crown Brand photos, issued from 1935 to 1940, with Montreal Canadiens and Maroons subjects dominating the lineup and contributing to a complete set of 68. Like most batches of Crown Brands, condition is all over the board, with some pictures re-glued to original beige mats and others (15) pasted to replacement/phoney backings. Such is the case of an Aurele Joliat photo, with glue stains showing on the reverse of the Howie Morenz mat and the King Clancy photo partially lifting off its apparent original backing. Team photos are another highlight, with the Canadiens (5), Maroons (3) Father Levesque Pee-Wees (3) and the 1936 Canadian Olympic squad among them. One trimmed mat (’35-36 Habs) and four with a pinhole are to note. Notable non-Montreal players include Bailey, Worters, Boucher, Kerr and Levinsky. Swell complements are a How to Become a Hockey Star booklet (G), a Crown Brand Corn Syrup (5 lb.) label and a nifty scribbler picturing swimmer Marilyn Bell.
