Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The artist behind the forever-popular Mars Attacks card set issued in 1962, Bob Powell enjoyed success during the golden age of comic book and illustration art in the 1930s and 1940s, with his work appearing in Timely, Harvey, Quality and other comics. We have the original artwork executed by Powell for an issue of Harvey’s Joe Palooka comic book in 1945, with the “Sport Short” featuring Howie Morenz. At approx 15” x 20” give or take, the four cardboard story boards feature attractive black and white artwork, with numerous cropping and editorial notes along the margins. There is glue residue along the top of the first board where the title would be mounted, with the section featuring the “Powell” signature cut away. A modern 8” x 10” image of the first two pages of the finished comic book will be included.
Toning has taken place to each of the story boards, with light to moderate surface, corner and edge wear. There is also some minor discolouration over the reverse of each, with the collection just begging to be framed.
