Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The second antique stick offered – along with the scarce Hobey Baker model – that we have never handled or have even seen, we have a Spalding Tommy Phillips Autograph model one-piece stick from circa 1910. Exceedingly rare despite being a popular model, examples show up in Spalding catalogs until at least 1917, despite Phillips hanging up his skates after his final season in Vancouver with the Millionaires in 1911-12. Full size, with the branded Phillips signature placed between “Spalding” and “Autograph” on one side of the pinned blade, a number of small papers – likely taken from programs – have been glued to different sections including all four sides of the shaft and the underside of the blade, including “Pittsburgh Pirates” (obscured), with players mentioned including Roy Worters and Baldy Cotton.
With just some heavy toning to the blade and shaft, the stick remains solid, with a few minor separations at the top of the knob. Phillips won Stanley Cups with both the Winged Wheelers and Thistles before being inducted as an inaugural member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945. Addendum; There is also a 2" v-shaped crack along the top of the heel.
