Serving dual assignments as both an enforcer and goal scorer for the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren would register a hefty 306 PIM during the 1980-81 NHL season, with his 59 points scored in 77 games helping to lead the Bullies to a second place finish in the Patrick Division. From his time in the City of Brotherly Love, we have a signed and photo-matched Philadelphia Flyers jersey worn by the Minnesota native, in both 1980-81 and 1981-82. Void of its original W.A. Goodman and Sons label, the vintage mesh sweater measures-out to roughly a size 52. Styled with the classic winged-P team crest, “17” appears over the sleeves and verso in oversized and layered tackle twill, with “Holmgren” across the affixed nameplate in single black twill. We should note that the Flyers wore these jerseys prior to being hemmed during the 1980-81 season and the 1981-82 pre-season. They were hemmed for the start of the 1981-82 regular season and only worn in October 1981 when the club switched to SandowSK.
Sporting moderate to heavier use, there are numerous stick marks beneath the team crest, with some light discolouration near the right breast. There are also heavy burns over each sleeve with a few small resulting holes, with pilling over the sleeves, lower reverse and beneath the fight strap. We should also note that the nameplate has been crudely affixed. Holmgren has signed within the reverse “7” in black marker, adding a personalization. Getty Image #53461940 (undated) has been matched to the small piece of fabric sticking out at the bottom of the collar, to the curvature of the black striping on the right side of the collar and to the perfect placement of the mesh holes along both sides of the collar including the examples with orange material visible.
