Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Shocking Pierre Elliot Trudeau with a vaseline-covered handshake when the Canadian Prime Minister visited the Canadiens dressing room, Guy Lapointe served his country on the ice, with appearances made at both the Summit Series – despite his wife pregnant and soon to give birth – and 1976 Canada Cup, where he scored an overtime winner at the buzzer, with the goal disallowed as time ran out. We have a photo-matched 1976 Team Canada jersey donned by Lapointe from the second set of whites worn by the team, with these examples with reinforced elbows given to Czech players in the famous center-ice exchange at the end of the last game of the final. Void of any collar labeling, the vintage sweater measures-out to roughly a size 50, with all identifiers including the team crest, numbers and letters rubberized, with the front collar cut and custom-vented.
The jersey remains supple, with all rubberized identifiers pliable, with no cracking or brittleness. There are a few dark marks over the half-maple leaf team crest, with a spot of red paint transfer over the left elbow, and some pilling within each lower sleeve. Screen captures from the last game of the finals of Lapointe show the specific manner in which the collar is custom-cut. Also, a number of photos throughout the tournament, including Getty Images #159241927 and #159241939 clearly show Lapointe wearing a jersey with a custom-cut collar. Additionally, Lapointe exchanged his jersey with Czech defenseman Milan Chalupa who wore #5, with a photo after the exchange showing him wearing Lapointe's jersey, while other screen captures are showing Lapointe wearing Chalupa's jersey.
