Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Historically significant as one of the very first professional hockey clubs, the Portage Lake Hockey Team was crowned “United States Champions” in 1902-03 – as the offered postcards attests – after defeating a club from Pittsburgh. Soon to be augmented by legendary superstars Cyclone Taylor, Riley Hern and Joe Hall, the Lakers would serve as one of early hockey’s greatest clubs. Featuring the full team posed in a studio setting, their wonderful period wool uniforms with monogrammed logo and Mic-Mac hockey sticks are in full view, with “Portage Lake Hockey Team, United States Champions – 1902-03” across the top along with “July 1904” handwritten within the bottom right, just beneath “Houghton Mich”. The reverse remains blank and fairly clean, with small areas of paper loss over three corners.
Void of any significant creases or wrinkles, there is just light toning present along with rounded corners, with a few very small chips to the surface over the obverse.
