Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Much rarer than a cut signature or an autographed letter, this official military promotion from the late 19th century has been signed in ink by the namesake of hockey's most treasured trophy. Lord Stanley of Preston died in 1908, leaving even some of the most complete of Hall of Fame collections without his signature. This wonderful and scarce treasure is an antique 9 1/2" x 15" document that has been elegantly signed at the top "Stanley of Preston" and dated August 10, 1891. The official Dominion of Canada document promotes Sergeant Reginald Mortimer Courtney to the rank of Lieutenant. Stanley has placed his seal and co-signed beside it in his capacity as Governor General of Canada. Matted and set in a 15 ½” x 21” detailed frame, there is some heavy staining along the top section, with the central portion of the Stanley signature affected.
As mentioned, the staining along the top border encroaches upon the central portion of the Stanley signature, with this staining continuing down the right side somewhat. There is also a bit of toning visible that runs from the bottom to the top in a few areas, with the document appearing to be split down the fold line at the center.
