Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
First witnessing hockey along with his family at Montreal's famous Winter Carnival in 1889, Lord Stanley of Preston was instantly enamoured, with the Montreal Gazette stating that he "expressed his great delight with the game of hockey and the expertise of the players". With a pair of sons now competing in the burgeoning game, Stanley commissioned the “Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" in 1892 to be awarded to the ‘top amateur hockey team in Canada’. We have an exceedingly rare and important military document from 1878 that has been signed by Lord Stanley. At roughly 12” x 15 ¾” (unfolded), the antique document feature’s “Victoria” centered over the top and executed in highly stylized script, with a pair of seals on the left side along with a “22-6-78” date stamp from the Chief Office. The Lord of Preston has signed along the bottom right – as “Fred Stanley” - with the 140-year old fountain pen signature remaining dark, with a second signature placed directly above, which is the signature of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces (1856-1895), signing on Queen Victoria’s behalf.
There are three vertical fold lines present, with these original to the document, with glue residue over one side of the reverse remaining from probable scrapbook removal. There is also toning along with a few faint stains/blemishes, with a few large creases over the upper left. Despite the condition issues, the document and signature display well, and would look stunning framed.
