Black Hawks all-time points leader Stan Mikita kept right on scoring after he became the eighth member of the NHL’s 500-goal club in 1976-77. Mikita’s 501st Goal puck is from the first of two goals he scored in Chicago’s 6-3 loss in Buffalo on March 2, 1977. Mikita scored his 501st goal 14 seconds into the second period, three days after he scored his milestone goal at home. According to our consignor, his aunt had this puck, and the “500” goal puck also offered in this auction, in her drawer for over 40 years. She had obtained it from her closest friend who was neighbor to many Black Hawks players who live lived in Elmhurst, Ill., at that time and also wrote for the local newspaper and did Hawks-related stories.
The Sabres NHL official game puck is the correct type for the era. Vintage tape applied to the back of the puck has a dedication and "501 3/2/77" handwritten in ballpoint.
Mikita’s 501st goal was his 17th of the 1976-77 season. He added his second goal of the game, the 502nd of his career and 18th of the season, on a power play at 10:33 of the third.
