Famous for the resulting broken nose he received after the celebratory embrace with Maurice Richard, Elmer Lach altered posterity with his Cup-winning overtime goal scored in Game 5 of the 1952-53 Stanley Cup finals, played at the Montreal Forum, on April 16, 1953. Originally obtained by our consignor's grandfather, Charles Édouard Hélie, who worked at the Forum as an usher behind the Montreal Canadiens bench, we have a puck used during the contest that later had the victorious particulars handwritten. The correct style puck for the period, the Art Ross NHL puck is the model used from 1950 to 1958, with dual logos. "Coupe Stanley 16-4-53" (April 16th 1953 Stanley Cup) is written on one side and "Elmer Lach 61 min. 22 sec." on the other (Elmer Lach scored the series-winning goal at 1:22 of overtime), with just light general surface wear to the puck itself.
We should note that the puck was later gifted to Charles Edouard Helie’s son, Jacques Hélie, who in turn later gifted it to his son, our consignor.
