Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017

The 1977 release of "Slap Shot" featured Paul Newman leading a losing industrial league hockey team, the “Charlestown Chiefs", on to victory by adding heaping portions of violence into the mix. Now a cult classic, Slap Shot is still one of the top rented movies in North America. This scarce and fantastic old durene uniform was worn during the filming by Michael Ontkean playing the role of "Ned Braden". No doubt one of a number produced for each player in a leading role by the wardrobe department for the production, the vintage Rawlings durene is tagged in the collar in size 48 and sports the "Charlestown All-American City" crest on the left shoulder. Two-tone number "10" rests on the back and again on each arm with the tackle twill "Chiefs" logo across the chest. The film prop survives in beautiful condition, with just a few small stains present on the upper front and reverse, along with some heavy fading to the Charleston crest over the left shoulder.
It is impossible to overstate the impact that Slap Shot has had on the game of hockey. The 1977 feature film starring the late Paul Newman is a cult classic whose numerous quotable lines are commonly used to this day throughout the game, often by those who weren’t even born when player-coach Reg Dunlop urged his fictional Charlestown Chiefs to play “Old Time Hockey” and “Let ‘Em Know You’re There!” Slap Shot was named “The Best Guy Movie of All Time” by Maxim magazine in 1998, beating out the likes of “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather”. Newman said that filming Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had making a movie.
