Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017

Hailing from the mid-to-late-1960s, we have an especially attractive vintage Chicago Black Hawks jersey that has been attributed to longtime Hawks centerman Bill Hay. Styled with the classic Hawks Indian head team crest with chain-stitched highlights, the durene V-neck has been accented with “1” in tackle twill on the sleeves and verso, along with matching fully chain-stitched tomahawk crests over each shoulder. We’re able to date the garment as the Berwyn address listed on the Gunzo’s collar tag changed to River Forest after the Berwyn location was destroyed by fire in 1970. The outline of the former numbers are visible as “8”, with the sweater recycled, most likely to St Catharines, with the present “1”s added at this time. An alternate’s “A” appears to have also possibly been present originally but is now removed, with the shoulder patches apparently removed and later re-applied as well.
We should note that Bill Hay wore #8 in 1966-67 with the "A", Gerry Goyer in 1967-68 and Jim Pappin in 1968-69 and 1969-70. Game-wear on the important vintage sweater includes wear along the front section including a small hole just above the lower striping band, with additional examples over each sleeve near the elbows. The garment is also littered with 25 team repairs, with 6 on front, 9 on the reverse and 7 over the right sleeve. There is also a pair over the left shoulder along with a single example over the right.
