Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
A style never seen by even the most advanced jersey aficionados, we have an extremely rare and possibly unique prototype-style California Seals sweater, hailing from the highly collected club’s inaugural NHL season in 1967-68. Manufactured by General Athletic, according to our consignor these jerseys predated the examples made by GA and used during the Seals’ inaugural campaign, with both the original “C” team crest before switching to the “O” design for Oakland, along with the sleeve numbers being moved up at some point to match the placement on the inaugural set that witnessed use. With just the remnants of a collar label present, GA laundering instructions have been affixed to the inside seam. Styled with a gorgeous multi-coloured chain-stitched team crest, the heavy knit tie-neck has been accented with sleeve, cuff and lower striping bands, along with tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers.
Seeing no NHL use as a prototype example, the attractive garment remains in gorgeous condition, with just a few tiny blemishes present from age. We should also note that the team crest exhibits more chain-stitching and less twill than the crests ultimately selected for game use.
