The standard when it comes to sports reporting and photography, Sports Illustrated first appeared on newsstand racks in the summer of 1954, with the popular magazine currently read by an estimated 23 million people each week. We have a great cache of the timeless publication, with over 400 copies spanning from the very first issue in 1954, right up until 1967. Presented are a single copy, issue #1 from 1954, along with 46 copies from 1955, 45 from 1956, 23 from 1957, 29 from 1958, 49 from 1959, 13 from 1960, 49 from 1961, 49 from 1962, 24 from 1964, 45 from 1965, 41 from 1966 and 25 from 1967. The full gamut of sports are featured, with a number of memorable covers including examples featuring Stan Musial, Joe Namath, Wilt Chamberlain, Bobby Hull, Johnny Unitas, Willie Mays and others.
The majority of the issues remain in pleasing mid-grade, with just expected handling wear along with half a century of storage life. Some are lower grade, with flaws that include tears, ripped covers, toning, creasing, and spine damage. The #1 issue exhibits a fairly clean cover, with light spine wear and a few small creases. There is also some minor toning to the interior, with the issue currently void of its baseball cards.
