Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Any and all surviving material from the short-lived WHA is always desirable, and we have a pair of game-used sticks from Ralph Backstrom and Rod Zaine used during their time with the Chicago Cougars in the early-to-mid-1970s. First, the Backstrom stick is a Sher-Wood PMP model with “Backstrom” stamped-on, along with handwritten “14”. The original black tape remains on the blade, with black over white in a spiral pattern on the handle/knob. Nice use is exhibited, with heavy wear to the blade and lower shaft, along with a crack along the underside near the heel. The Zaine example is a Northland Custom Pro, with “Zaine” and “8” appearing on the upper shaft, with most of the lower striping sticker intact. The original tape, minus a strand or two remains on the blade, with the original white tape on the knob. A dozen individuals have signed both sides of the shaft in ballpoint, including Rick Morris, Rod Zaine, Dunc McCallum, Dave Dryden and others. The stick shows nice use, with heavy wear to the blade and lower shaft, along with a crack along the underside. Considering the Cougars short three-season life, game-used items from the franchise don’t surface every day.
