Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017

Lost for the most part to the annals of time, the American game of roller hockey and it’s closely related cousin ice polo battled ice hockey for preeminence during the late 19th century. Played with a shorter and rounded-blade stick, a ball instead of a puck was also utilized. This early ice polo stick harkens back to that transitional era. Produced by prominent maker Spalding, their trademark is stamped onto the blade with this particular style of stamp divulging a manufacturing date of no later then the early-1900s. Overstamped, the word “Spalding” is illegible, with the stick also having a capital “B” placed on the upper shaft. At roughly 33” in length from the top of the shaft to where the blade starts to curve, the stick remains in very good condition, with wear to the blade along with some black finish on the top-side of the blade. The handle also appears to have been left rough, with no original finish applied.
