Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017

Number 60 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players of all-time, netminder Turk Broda spent his entire 14 NHL seasons in Ontario, winning a pair of Vezina Trophies along with 5 Stanley Cups for his efforts. The Brandon Manitoba native was also elected to hockey’s house of holy, fittingly, the last time his Leafs hoisted Lord Stanley’s hardware, in 1967. We have an extremely scarce stick used by Broda during the 1940s, and it’s been signed by the Leafs legend. A proper Love & Bennett model, stamps are present on each side of the handle from period supplier Brown’s Sports, with “Broda” along with a second faded notation handwritten in pencil along the top of the shaft, beneath the tape covered knob. The original tape is present on the blade and paddle, along with strands over the handle and knob that are presently loose and can slide along the shaft. Tape has also been removed near the heel and on the upper paddle, with Turk adding a large and flowing black marker signature, fading slightly over time.
Thorough game-use is evident, a testament to the frugal nature of the period with this stick obviously seeing a ton of action. There are some slight separations to the built-up pieces on the paddle including protruding nails, with the blade cracked in a number of spots throughout its length. A few grooves to the wood are also visible, over both the heel section and along the underside of the lower paddle. Despite these imperfections, the stick survives admirably, and is ideal for display with a large and gorgeous signature. This is only the second game-used stick from the HOFer that we have ever handled.
