The 86th Grey Cup to decide the Canadian Football League championship was held in 1998 in Winnipeg, with the Calgary Stampeders defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats by a score of 26-24. This amazing size 12 ½” Grey Cup ring was presented to Anthony McClanahan, with his surname, position and player number sculpted into one shank of the award, above and below an intricate image of the skyline of Calgary. The opposite shank is a design of the 86th Grey Cup logo. The top holds the raised image of a galloping horse, encrusted with real diamonds, floating in a sea of larger precious stones with the words "Grey Cup Champions" and year "1998". In inner band is stamped with the 10K mark and "Intergold", the company of craftsmen who produced this fantastic solid gold 42 gram memento. Also included is the original finished wood presentation box, with a small name plaque affixed to the interior.
Wear is present along the band, shanks and edges, with the band bent, losing it circular continuity. A number of large scratches and dings are also present on the outside band, with additional heavy wear to the face. The original presentation box also shows wear from use, with some of the finish removed from the edges of the lid and base.
The game was tight through three quarters, a set up to a dramatic fourth quarter. A costly turnover by McManus gave the Stampeders the lead when he was intercepted by Aldi Henry, helping set up a 22-yard field goal. Another from 32 yards out, put Calgary in front 23-18. In the final minutes, trailing 24-23, the Stampeders put together a winning drive. With no time remaining in regulation, McLoughlin kicked a 35-yard field goal to clinch the game and the Grey Cup.
