Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Originally acquired by Joseph Ciavaglia while serving as the Banquet Manager at the Chateau Laurier, we have programs from the 10th and 11th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner and Award Night held in 1963 (10th) and 1964 (11th), with each signed by at least 20. Fold-over affairs at roughly 6 ½” x 10” (folded), we have a number of athletes from varied sports including hockey, football and baseball, with signatures in the 1963 program from deceased hockey HOFer Cy Dennenny, along with fellow HOFers from football and baseball, with Paul Hornung and Bob Feller, while the 1964 example features deceased hockey HOF executive Sam Pollock, along with Frank Frisch of the baseball HOF and Joe Kapp from football's HOF. There is also a signature from boxing legend James Braddock.
All signatures have been scripted along the inside back cover in ballpoint (outside back cover for the 1963 program), with all examples well executed. Other signers from the 1963 program include Red Kelly, Bud Grant, Red O’Quinn, George Dixon, Phil Goyette, Frank Lair, Anne Heggtveit-Hamilton, Barney Hartman, Tommy Ruchardson, Terry Keilty, Gord Trivett, Laird Watt, Dick Pound, Renata Pikelis, Art Tommy, Earl Bullis, Sam Pollock, Brian Tinnins, Shirley Thomas, John Clifford and Andy O’Brien, while the 1964 program has also been signed by Father David Bauer, Vic Emery, Russ Jackson, Frank Clair, Joe Breen, Bab Smart, Ron Andrews, Andy O’Brien, Terry Kielty, Sheila Crepen, Gord Trivett and Earl Bullis. The Associated Canadian Travellers programs themselves remain in excellent condition. In the possession of Lynn Ciavaglia for the past 50 years, she best describes the origins of the five offered programs (offered within three lots in this auction), “These menus have been in my sole possession since the years 1960 through 1965. My father Joseph Ciavaglia was the Banquet Manager at the Chateau Laurier during this period and as such had complete access to the head tables. He thus was able to collect the autographs before people began to disperse. He would bring them home and give them to me where I have kept them for over fifty years”.
