Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Originally acquired by Joseph Ciavaglia while serving as the Banquet Manager at the Chateau Laurier, we have programs from the 7th and 8th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner and Award Night held in 1960 (7th) and 1961 (8th), with each signed by 20+. Fold-over affairs at roughly 6 ½” x 10” (folded), we have a number of athletes from varied sports including hockey and football, with signatures in the 1960 program from deceased hockey HOFers Maurice Richard and Clarence Campbell, along with HOFer Henri Richard. Russ Jackson from CFL fame is also present along with iconic runner Jesse Owens. The 1961 example features deceased hockey HOFers Aurele Joliet, Lynn Patrick and TP Gorman, along with Charlie Dressen and Mel Allen from the diamond and Jersey Joe Walcott from the ring.
All signatures have been scripted along the inside back cover in ballpoint, with all examples well executed. Other signers from the 1960 program include Claude Richard, Ralph Backstrom, Frank Clair, George Terlep, Jimmy Dykes, George Nelms, James Baskin, Hap Shouldice, Ernestine Russell, Ed Houston, Jake Gaudaur, Earl Bullis, Tom Foley, Ed Condon, JP McCaffrey, Johnny Logan, Nanci Parker, Gord Trivett and Andy O’Brien, while the example from 1961 also has Ron Stewart, Frank Clair, Ken McKenzie, George Terlep, Gord Trivett, Cecil Duncan, Duncan Cheyne, Anne Heggtveit, Marion Daly, Judy Darling, Charlie Boland, Terry Kielty, Jim Thompson, Earl Bullis and Lorne Main. The Associated Canadian Travellers programs themselves remain in excellent condition. In the possession of Lynn Ciavaglia for the past 50 years, she best describes the origins of the five offered programs (offered within three lots in this auction), “These menus have been in my sole possession since the years 1960 through 1965. My father Joseph Ciavaglia was the Banquet Manager at the Chateau Laurier during this period and as such had complete access to the head tables. He thus was able to collect the autographs before people began to disperse. He would bring them home and give them to me where I have kept them for over fifty years”.
