The second film in the popular series of Edgar Allan Poe-based movies released by American International Pictures, The Pit and The Pendulum was both produced and directed by low budget trailblazer Roger Corman, with the film’s importance noted by Stephen King, describing a shock sequence as being among the most important moments in post-1960 horror film. Released in 1961 and starring horror film guru Vincent Price, a young Englishman in sixteenth century Spain investigates his sister’s murder at a haunting and foreboding castle, only to become the next victim of his demented brother-in-law. We have a typically-sized one sheet poster from the film. Featuring our hero chained to a highly complex torture device, a provocatively-dressed woman looks on, with “The Greatest Terror Tale Ever Told” along the top border. Thrice folded, the poster exhibits prominent fold lines, with a single vertical fold line along with three horizontal examples. The colours remain bold, with heavy wear along fold line intersections including small breaches/holes. The main vertical fold has separated from the top for a length of roughly 7”, with additional small tears at edges present. Some residue staining is also present along the top center and at the top and bottom right corners, most likely resulting from a former mounting. Hand-numbered “61/259”, the poster is void of the very tip of the bottom right corner, with surface loss at each remaining corner. “Pit and Pendulum” is also stamped on the reverse, with a few handwritten notations. A scarce example, the poster displays well despite it’s lower technical grade.
