Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
We rate “special” the opportunities to score both Howie Morenz and Georges Vezina desirable collectibles at the same time, with a young Morenz and an aging Vezina leading this group of crude little elusive cards issued by Montreal’s Maple Crispette Company. Morenz’s card #12 is graded Good 2 by PSA, with a PR 1 grade given to the Vezina. Three VG cards include 19-Sammy Rothschild, 16-Dutch Cain and 11-Billy Boucher, the latter slabbed by SGC. Two other PSA jobs are 7-Herberts (Good 2) and 9-Cooper (PR 1). The remaining (raw) cards feature some big names but are almost all Poor, exhibiting considerable creases/wear. Cards of Aurele Joliat (paper loss on the front), Newsy Lalonde, Punch Broadbent, Billy Burch and Shorty Green highlight the cast, completed by players from the Hamilton Tigers and first-year Maroons and Bruins. Cards required to complete the set and not present are #s 2-Benedict, 6, 8, 10, 17, 23 and 28, along with the rare short-printed Sprague Cleghorn card, thought to have been limited to reduce the number of prize winners, with the card backs offering a pair of skates in exchange for a complete set of cards.
