Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
With leather the dominant material used for sporting goods throughout the first half of the 20th century, we have a great group of hockey items totaling 9, all made of the resilient material, predating later nylon and composite examples. Included, we have a rare and highly desirable D&R leather helmet, along with two sets of early goaltender gloves from both D&R and Holdens, followed by three blockers including rare examples from WinnWell and Mohawk. Rounding out the lot, we have three trappers, including a pair of earlier-style specimens from D&R and Cooper Weeks.
The breakdown for each of the offered items is as follows: 1) D&R leather hockey helmet. A two-toned “spoked-rim” style helmet, all padding and strapping is intact, with “D&R” along with the model number screened-on across the forehead padding in silver. A spot along the inside reverse also shows evidence of a former D&R cloth patch. With wear to the leather, the helmet remains in very good condition, ideal for display. 2) Holdens goalie gloves. Early examples with open finger sections, wooden dowels have been employed, with gold leather accents over the thumb sections. Showing great use, a Holdens cloth patch is affixed to the interior of the left hand glove. 3) D&R goalie gloves. Solid red with cloth labels present, each glove features a pocket section, as these models were early for this style, with wooden dowels also used. Despite heavy use with considerable wear to the leather, the gloves are complete and display well. 4) WinnWell blocker. Surviving in beautiful high grade, “WinnWell” appears in silver along with the model number. A cloth patch is also present, with a date of “1949-50” visible over the thick wrist guard padding. 5) Mohawk blocker. Surviving in beautiful high grade, “Mohawk” appears in silver along with the model number. Felt covering has been used, with a faded handwritten notation present, possibly a year. 6) Cooper Weeks blocker. A modern style blocker from the 1960s, a cloth patch is present along with “NHL” and “Professional GM10”. In very good condition, the glove exhibits wear to the leather in a number of spots. 7) D&R trapper. An earlier-style example with a unique pocket section, “D&R” is screened-onto the palm section. Heavy use is shown, with some darkening to the leather over time. 8) Cooper Weeks trapper. A Gold Seal GM6 model with cloth patch intact, the glove shows great use, with heavy wear to the leather in spots. 9) Cooper trapper. A modern style GM12 model with identifiers screened-on, great use is exhibited, with “B12” handwritten over the wrist guard section. As an added bonus, a Reach “Spitter” catcher’s mask is also included. Showing nice use, the padding has been re-wrapped with what appears to be a shoelace, with wear to the metal finish of the mask itself.
