Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
With Major League Baseball celebrating a century of prowess in 1976, a number of antique “throw-back” uniforms and accoutrements were utilized, including pillbox caps. 1977 also witnessed a change in uniform style for Pittsburgh, with the club employing pinstriping to their typically solid white and grey ensemble. We have a nice grouping of Pirates items in this lot totaling four, with a jersey worn by Bruce Kison in 1977 along with uniform pants from the same season worn by Jerry Hairston. There is also a pair of batting helmets from the 1980s, with an example worn by R.J. Reynolds in the mid-1980s, along with a helmet donned by Benny Distefano in 1989.
The breakdown for each of the offered items is as follows. 1) 1977 Pittsburgh Pirates jersey worn by Bruce Kison. A label from maker Descente sits along the lower front, with a date swatch of “25 40 77”. Featuring “Pirates” across the chest in tackle twill, the V-neck pullover also features “25” on front and verso in matching dual-colour tackle twill. With no unsightly wear or obtrusive damage, the jersey remains in gorgeous condition. 2) 1977 Pittsburgh Penguins pants worn by Jerry Hairston. A label from Descente sits along the waistband with “32 36 77”, with a number of handwritten numbers and notations including “32”, “57”, “22 T” and “Nich”. With no damage or staining present, the pants remain in excellent condition, ideal for display with the offered and matching 1977 jersey. 3) Mid-1980s Pittsburgh Pirates batting helmet worn by R.J. Reynolds. In Pirates yellow with a black brim, a black “P” decal remains affixed along the front, with “23” along the back. With heavy wear and staining to the interior padding, the helmet shows thorough use, with a number of scratches, marks and abrasions present, along with some light paint transfer in spots. A piece of paper has been taped to the underside stating “Mid-1980s R.J. Reynolds Pittsburgh Pirates game-used batting helmet”. 4) 1989 Pittsburgh Pirates batting helmet worn by Benny Distefano. Solid black with a yellow “P”, “30” also appears across the back. The manufacturers labels are still affixed to the interior, with “1989” handwritten. With heavy wear to the interior and exterior including scratches and abrasions, the helmet remains in very good condition.
