Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Loaded with Hall of Fame talent, the 1931-32 Toronto Maple Leafs’ first dispatched of both the Black Hawks and Maroons before taking out the New York Rangers three straight to be crowned Stanley Cup champions. We have a stick signed by the 1931-32 Leafs. Full size with the maker lost to time, 19 have signed one side of the blade in fountain pen, with tape contemporary to the signatures remaining on the blade. The signatures all remain dark and bold with HOFers Jackson, Primeau, Conacher, Clancy, Horner, Day, Bailey, Selke and Coach Dick Irvin signing. We should note a possible faded “4” on the upper shaft that is incredibly hard to confirm, with the possibility existing of use by Hap Day, as he wore “4” at this period with the Leafs, with this style tape job on the blade and shaft similar to his.
Others who have signed this desirable vintage stick include Andrew Blair, Bob Gracie, Frank Finnigan, Baldy Cotton, Harold Darragh, Alex Levinsky, Fred Robertson, Lorne Chabot and Wilf Cude. Those fastidious collectors will recognize that Cude never dressed for the Leafs, with his signature on this stick explained by the fact that he served as the NHL’s backup goaltender, used by any club that required his netminding services. The stick itself remains solid, with just some wear to the tape along the blade.
