Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
A number of interesting baseball items are available in this lot, with a large focus on the Brooklyn Dodgers. We have photos, baseballs, a couple programs and a fungo baseball bat. We have 53 total photos, with 27 featuring the Dodgers, along with 12 featuring different images of ballparks, with another 14 miscellaneous. The Dodgers photos are from the late-1930s to early-1940s, and they range in size from 5” x 7” to 8” x 10”. They appear to be from a training camp as a number of individuals pictured never suited up for the club. Included are Paul Paynick, Jim Winford, Calvin Chapman, Kemp Wicker, Tom Drake, Emile Lochbaum, Connie Grob and others. The ballpark photos feature a number of venues, with interesting interior shots with Jet Stadium (Ohio), Silver Stadium, Luther Williams in Macon and Gran Estadio in Havana Cuba included. The miscellaneous photos include a few press examples, and highlights include a few action shots along with examples for Jackie Price (3), Otis Williams and Tony Castano. Most of the photos exhibit expected handling wear, with some in lower grade with creases, surface wear and dinged corners. Next, the baseballs included total 3, with an Official Spalding Babe Ruth League ball from the 1960s (heavily toned and scuffed), an Official MacPhail American League ball (clean with light toning) and a mini Reach/Spalding ball that could possibly be a salesman’s sample. The programs number 2, with an example from the White Sox for a 1963 contest against Boston, along with a 1959 Senators program for a match against Kansas City. Both programs exhibit handling wear, and remain in very good condition. Lastly, the fungo bat is a 37” Louisville number, with a long and thin handle that culminates in a thin bottle-shaped barrel. The signature on the barrel has been chipped away, which also affects the center brand. The bat shows heavy wear with deadwood present along the barrel.
