Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
From the heyday of the Montreal Royals in the 1950s, where the team accomplished four first place finishes within the decade culminating in league championships in both 1953 and 1958, we have a nice little collection of Royals items. Presented we have a 1959 Montreal Royals team-signed ball, along with an Official International League example. There is also a large group of unused Royals letterheads (2 different types), four 1950s programs featuring the Royals, including an example for a match against Havana, a pair of Royals box seat charts for Delorimier Stadium, a pair of vintage Royals stickers and a team crest. Lastly, we have a large and comprehensive scrapbook featuring the Royals along with other sports including hockey, football, boxing and wrestling.
The 1959 Royals team-signed ball is an Official International League example, with 21 signatures in ballpoint including Amoros, Lasorda, Aspromonte, Birrer, Brumley, Goliat, Harris, LaPalme, Lennon, Onuska, Parris, Roberts, Rodriquez, Scull, Teed, Valdes and others. “Montreal Royals 1959” is written across the sweet spot, with most of the signatures remaining in beautiful condition, with literally no fading, while the ball itself is evenly toned with a few small areas of dirt staining. The matching International League ball hails from the same time frame as the signed example, and it remains in very good condition with some toning, along with some scuffing to the stampings. Next, the programs hail from 1956 (vs Miami), 1957 (vs Miami), 1958 (vs Havana) and 1959 (vs Richmond). A few have loose pages with some notations handwritten (1956 and 1957), along with expected handling wear. The unused letterheads come in two varieties as previously mentioned, with one example featuring an image of a ballplayer and measures 8 ½” x 14”, with approx. 80 examples, while the second letterhead is 8 ½” x 11”, with a full colour Royals logo along the top, with 10 examples present. Selling at $5 a pop, that would be quite a tidy little sum for any with any “dealer” interest. Lastly, the offered scrapbook. Set in a heavy steel binder at 11” x 15”, dozens upon dozens of pages have been loaded with period clippings, including a large selection of full colour examples. As mentioned, the book features the Royals, but a number of other sports are well represented including football, hockey, boxing and wrestling. Highlights include a 1958 Royals team photo, 90 small photos with bios for HOF baseball members, a 1954 AL champs Indians team photo, a 1954 Giants world champs team photo, 22 Royals player photos from a set including Lasorda, Aspromonte, Lennon and others. Next, we have Canadiens team photos for 1955-56, 1956-57 (Molson), 1959-60 (Molson) and the 1958-59 Rangers. There is an endless supply of interesting clippings including a number of boxing examples from the late-19th century that were reprinted in the 1950s. The book is extremely well put together, and would be a highlight in any vintage scrapbook collection.
