The first of three consecutive Grey Cup titles for Queen's University, the 1922 championship featured the Ontarian's taking on the Edmonton Elks, the forerunner to the famous Eskimos, winning the Grey Cup 13-1 shortly after a snowstorm on Dec 2nd 1922. We have an extremely rare Grey Cup trophy that was presented to Dave Harding for his participation as a player. Attractive in its diminutive stature at roughly 5 ¾” in height, a silver trophy bowl sits mounted to a tiered wooden base, with “Earl Grey Cup” engraved above, along with “C.R.F.U. Championship 1922”. The reverse features “Queens” above, along with “D.A. Harding” and his position of “L.Half”. Hallmarks also appear along the bottom rim on the reverse, along with “Sterling”. Harding scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter in the contest, running in the ball from the 10-yard line.
Considerable wear is present on the rare trophy, with dirt, marks and scratches, along with heavy wear to the surface of the painted wooden base. The bowl itself has also lost its circular continuity over time. Despite these obvious flaws, the trophy displays wonderfully, and is the absolutely perfect size to serve as a companion piece to a period Queens cabinet photo.
The journey to the Grey Cup for Queens in 1922 began with a battle against Varsity, where they were crowned intercollegiate champions. They then followed this up by defeating the Toronto Argonauts 12-11 to secure the Eastern Canadian championship, advancing to the Grey Cup against Edmonton.
