Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
At the height of its powers from 1937 till circa-1950, the Negro American League encompassed a number of famous and historically significant ball clubs including the Chicago American Giants, Kansas City Monarchs and Birmingham Black Barons. We have a scarce Rawlings Official Negro American League baseball, and it’s been signed by nine including legendary pioneer Jackie Robinson. Featuring slightly faded stampings, the ball originates from Chicago American Giants owner J.B. Martin’s tenure as league president. Along with the previously mentioned Jackie Robinson, others signers include Percy Smith (sweet spot), Gil Hodges, Maury Wills, Luke Easter, Bob Young, Ralph Brown, John Glenn and Clyde MacNeal. A tenth possible signature is also present, with “Bee-Bop”, most likely originating from pitcher Harold “Bee-Bop” Gordon. All signatures have been administered in matching ballpoint, with some light fading taking place to a number of examples including Robinson, while the ball itself exhibits some even toning/soiling throughout.
