Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Perhaps the most prolific autograph signer in history, Babe Ruth signatures - no matter how plentiful, never seem to satisfy the feverish demand. According to collector extraordinaire Barry Halper, the Babe was so continuously hounded for his John Hancock that after retiring, he would carry around a small supply of pre-signed cards to hand out to admirers as the situation warranted. Thankfully, we have the most desirable vehicle for the Babe’s signature, with Ruth placing pen to leather on this particular American League example sometime in the early-1940s, having made the transition from baseball demigod to regular civilian.
A proper American League sphere hailing from the presidency of William Harridge, Ruth has taken his familiar ownership of the sweet spot, brandishing a large and gorgeous signature that remains especially bold. Adding considerable fuel to the fire, the vintage ball boasts an evenly toned surface, with no obtrusive staining or scuffing visible whatsoever.
A blue-chip investment worthy of centerpiece status in even the most elite of collections, the Babe’s signature transcends baseball and sport, with his status as an all-time American icon completely cemented for generations to come. Full PSA/DNA documentation will accompany, along with an LOA from JSA.
We should also note that this important Ruth ball was originally sold by Heritage a few years ago (auction #7150), with the auction house grading the fountain pen signature on the ball a solid 9 out of 10, also noting that the ball itself "is as clean as the proverbial whistle".
