Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
After his Renfrew Hockey Club was rejected from the newly formed and short-lived Canadian Hockey Association in 1909 along with the Montreal Wanderers, millionaire owner Ambrose O’Brien founded the NHA, which included the Cobalt Silver Kings, Haileybury Comets, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Shamrocks, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and his Renfrew Creamery Kings as inaugural members. We have two gorgeous team photos featuring Renfrew, with an example from the first season in 1909-10, along with a team photo from the club’s post-NHA days in 1924-25. Both at just under 11” x 14”, the 1909-10 example features the club’s most famous line-up, with Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde and the Patrick brothers pictured, along with team management. The photographer is also listed along the bottom right, with “Handford Renfrew” along with the date of “1910”.
Remaining in beautiful condition with just some even toning along with some slight “warping” to the right border, there is also a very tiny edge tear along the bottom border. We should also note that this is only the second example of this historically important photo we’ve ever handled, with this team photo appearing identical in both size and construction to the past photo we’ve sold, with this example most likely never affixed to a cabinet mount. The 1924-25 Renfrew team photo pictures cameos of club members, with long time Renfrew netminder Bert Lindsay now appearing in a managerial position. The photographer Handford is listed along the bottom, with attractive Renfrew Hockey Club monograms appearing in the top left and right corners. Some fairly heavy toning is present, along with some light staining, spotting and glue residue on the reverse. A few creases are also present, with the very tip of the bottom left corner clipped. Arguably one of the most important teams in the rich pantheon of Canadian hockey history, these Renfrew Hockey Club photos should garner considerable interest from knowledgeable collectors.
