Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Legendary in the scope of historical hockey, the Renfrew Creamery Kings were arguably the greatest of the turn-of-the-century clubs, with Ambrose O'Brien hand-selecting icons Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde and the formidable Patrick bothers to insure success. We have an extremely rare postcard featuring the squad from 1909-10, and it’s the first example of this particular style we’ve handled. At just over 3 ¼” x 5 ½”, the black and white image features team members emerging from an egg, with “Easter Greetings” above. The reverse features fountain pen text attributed to postcard producer Ed Handford, who designed this very image, with “This is our good team of hockey players – the bunch who played in New York last Saturday night and won – score 9-4”.
The postcard exhibits silvering, with just minor surface wear to the front, along with a small crease over the bottom left corner. The reverse is fairly clean apart from the previously mentioned text, with a large “2” handwritten over the stamp box. “Hanford Photo” also appears within the bottom section of the pictured egg on the obverse.
Ed Handford designed this Easter postcard using the popularity of the Renfrew Millionaires as a big selling point, and he made considerable income in portraiture, although photograph postcards were also a big part of his livelihood.
