A participant at the infamous 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, we have a nice cache of Olympic material all originating from the collection of Canadian athlete and manager Bob Osborne. We have an opening day program from the 1936 Olympic games, along with 2 different daily programs (one with notes from Osborne), plus Bob’s Olympic basketball rule book (signed by Osborne inside) along with a dinner menu. Next, we have a pull-over sweater that Bob wore in the 1956 Games, his Silver Olympic Order signed by Juan-Antonio Samaranch, 1934 Kelowna track meet 1st place trophy, 1971 Pan American Games set of 9 prints, a 1988 Pan American Games 40th anniversary medallion, a North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance Professionals medallion, a 1967 Canadian Olympics Association medallion and finally, three various crests.
The breakdown for the available items in this lot from the Bob Osborne collection are as follows. 1) 1936 Olympics opening day program. At just under 6” x 9”, the 56 page softcover booklet is titled “Tages=Programm”, with “XI. Olympilche Spiele Berlin 1936” below. In very good condition with handling wear, a crease and some spine wear, the booklet is perfect for display. 2) Bob’s 1936 Olympic basketball program. Just under 5” x 7 ½”, the 38 page book features a map affixed within the back, with the events and times listed. The book has also been signed by Osborne on the first page, and it remains in very good condition with just regular handling wear. 3) 1936 Olympic menu. Great Art Deco graphics are featured, with the daily menu for the Games listed in English, French and German. A fold-out affair, the menu exhibits fairly heavy toning, with a small break to the surface along one of the fold lines. 4&5) 1936 Olympic daily programs. A pair from both the 1st and 6th of August, the example for the 6th has cycling on the cover, and it’s been signed by Osborne on the cover. Both exhibit moderate wear, with no unsightly damage. 6) 1956 Olympic Games Team Canada sweater. Solid red and large in size with a label along the collar from maker Sandow, a circular felt crest with embroidered maple leaf has “Olympic Games” above and “Canada” below. With just a few small marks present, the sweater remains in excellent condition. 7-9) 1988 Pan American Games 40th anniversary medallion, North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance Professionals medallion and 1967 Canadian Olympics Association medallion. Each medallion comes in its original case. The 1988 example (2 ½”) is gold-coloured, with an Olympic torch pictured, with the attractive decorative case in beautiful high grade. The ’67 association medal (1 ½”) shows wear, with the Olympic rings featured on the face of the coin and on the original box, while the third medallion (2 ½”) has some wear to the surface with “Robert F. Osborne” across the front, along with a highly detailed back picturing athletes. 10) Silver Olympic Order presented to Robert Osborne. At 9” x 14” and on fairly thick stock, the certificate is in French and has been signed by Olympic President Juan-Antonio Samaranch. A few blemishes are present, along with some light creasing and an edge tear. The Olympic Order is the supreme individual honor accorded by the International Olympic Committee. 11) 1971 Pan American Games set of 9 prints. At 11 ½” x 16 ½”, the original folder contains all 9 prints, and they remain in beautiful condition, with just some light handling wear and toning present. 12-15)Track meet trophy and crests. Rounding out this interesting Olympic memorabilia lot, we have Osborne’s tiny 1st place Kelowna Track Meet trophy from 1934. At just under 5” in height, the trophy with wooden base remains in gorgeous condition. Lastly, we have a Pan American Games crest with Canadian maple leaf, a second crest with the Olympic rings and “Canada” below, along with an example that say “Olympic Academy” in both French and English.
A member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the BC Hall of Fame and a number of others as well, Bob Osborne went to the 1936 Olympics as a player representing Canada at basketball, winning a silver medal. He later coached Canada's Olympic basketball team in 1948, and was also the manager of the Olympic track team at the 1956 games.
