Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
A favourite of this writer growing up, the Montreal Canadiens throughout the 1980s featured a changing of the guard so to speak, with a number of stars from the late-1970s dynasty still present, along with a new and exciting group of players that would thrill fans for years to come. We have 5 team-signed Habs sticks from this very period, with four examples also game-used. Featured are game-used examples from Bob Gainey (1988-89 signed by approx. 19), Mats Naslund (1989-90 signed by 21), Petr Svoboda (1985-86 Stanley Cup championship season – signed by 21) and Craig Ludwig (1988-89 signed by 18). Lastly, we also have a game-issued Mario Tremblay stick from the 1983-84 NHL season that has been signed by approx. 25.
The breakdown for each of these game-used and team-signed sticks is as follows. 1) Bob Gainey 1988-89 signed by approx. 19. A Chimo GLM 999 model, “Gainey B.” appears on the upper shaft, with the tape present on the blade and handle. Just light use is exhibited on the stick, with wear to the lower shaft. Roughly 19 have signed in blue marker, and a few of the signatures exhibit light fading/smudging. Included are Gainey, McPhee, Smith, Courtnall, Chelios, Hayward and others. 2) Mats Naslund 1989-90 signed by 21. A Titan 2020TPM model, “M. Naslund” has been stamped on, with the original tape on the blade and handle. 21 have signed in blue felt tip marker, with a few signatures fading over time. Included are Courtnall, Roy, Keane, Walter, Richer, Cote and others. Nice use is exhibited on the stick, with heavy wear to the blade and lower shaft. 3) Petr Svoboda 1985-86 Stanley Cup championship season – signed by 21. A Sher-Wood PMP model with “Svoboda” on the upper shaft, with the stick retaining its tape on the blade and handle. 21 have signed in blue marker along the taped sections of the blade and shaft, and the signatures display well, including Savard, Perron, Penney, McPhee, Kurvers, Skrudland and others. Just light game-use is present. 4) Craig Ludwig 1988-89 signed by 18. A Canadien Custom-Pro, “Ludwig” appears on the upper shaft, with the tape on the handle/knob and blade in place. 18 have signed in blue ink, with some fading, including Courtnall, Carbonneau, Richer, Keane and others, with just light game-use exhibited. 5) Mario Tremblay 1983-84 game-issued stick signed by approx. 25. “M. Tremblay” appears on the upper shaft of this Victoriaville stick, with approx. 25 ballpoint signatures present, including Gainey, Smith, Wamsley, Shutt and others. We should also note that each stick (except the Naslund example) has been covered from top to bottom with a fairly thick layer of varnish, securing both the signatures and the original tape and sticker accents.
