From the Broad Street Bullies’ inaugural NHL season where a precedent of success was instituted with a first place finish in the West Division, we have an impressive dual-sided banner that originally hung in the Philadelphia Spectrum. The Flyers would lose in the Quarter Finals that season to fellow NHL freshman in the form of the St. Louis Blues in 7 games. Led by Lou Angotti and Flyers legend Gary Dornhoefer, the boys from the City of Brotherly Love helped spark the flames of the Flyers immense following that first season, with a tradition of both aggressive play and sheer dominance that continues to this day.
Massive in size at roughly 95” x 145”, the heavy canvas banner in Flyers colours features an NHL shield logo, along with “West Division Champions” and “1967-68”, with the familiar and classic Flyers emblem beneath. We should note that this banner was removed from the aforementioned Spectrum in the mid-1970s, residing in a private collection ever since. To illustrate its quality construction, all identifiers including logos are crafted from thick canvas, and have been affixed directly to the banner. None of the graphics have been cheaply painted on. The condition itself is very good, with expected wear from its former use including some light toning and discolouration, along with light staining in spots. Grommets are in place to enable display, with this unique and historic item a must for any true Flyers’ hopefuls.
