Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Thankfully for modern collectors, the habit of “scrapbooking” important and sentimental items was extremely popular throughout the late-1800s to the mid-part of the 20th century. Directly from the Leichnitz family, we have 3 scrapbooks all pertaining to Julius “Pete” Leichnitz and his involvement with the RCAF Flyers and their gold medal victory at the 1948 Winter Olympics. Ranging in size from 10” x 12 ½” to 11 ¼” x 15”, two of the albums feature mostly newspaper cutouts, while the third has 41 photographs of varying sizes including 19 with Flyers players in uniform. There’s a game action photo with mountains in the background, a photo from the medal ceremony, and a full team photo. An LOA from the Leichnitz family will be included.
Other interesting items present includes a congratulatory telegram, a “Suggested Personal Kit” list for team travel from the RCAF…with most item’s listed mandatory, a photo picturing trophies, awards and keepsakes from the games and more. The albums featuring mostly newspaper clippings have a number of items removed, with pages cut and glue residue remaining. The photos have all been “tipped in” using corners, so most should be removable if the winning bidder so desires with little damage to the backs.
