Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
This tremendous Oshawa Generals jersey was not only worn by Eric Lindros in his rookie season, it was worn throughout the season, in the OHL playoffs, and in the 1990 Memorial Cup victory… and it’s been photo-matched! We are very pleased to be able to offer this important and historic garment to the collecting community. Maska Ultrafil tagging remains affixed to the collar, with an embroidered CCM patch on the back bottom hem. Accented with tackle twill numbers and name-on-nameplate, the jersey also features a partially embroidered Generals team crest.
Worn throughout the season along with the playoffs and Memorial Cup, there is considerable wear to mention with a number of large stick marks on the lower front, upper right sleeve and lower left sleeve. There are additional dark marks scattered throughout including through the right sleeve’s numbers and around the team crest. A few small holes present are also testament to the amount of strain Eric put the garment through, with examples on the upper and lower left sleeve, the back including the neckline and on the lower front band. The v-neck collar has also been slightly torn, with a large team repair on the back to the right of the nameplate.
The photo-matches for this important jersey are numerous. Roughly 15 digital images of photo-matches will be included, along with a DVD of the 1990 Memorial Cup game and 6 actual photos/pictures of the photo-matches which are also included in the digital matches. Perfect matches can be made from the provided material to two marks through the right sleeve’s second “8”, to a small pattern of black marks on the left sleeve just above the cuff, to two white streaks on the upper left shoulder and near the back neckline seam, and to a light-coloured streak to the right of the right sleeves numbers. The torn collar and oddly shaped “R” on the nameplate also match photos provided.
Photo evidence clearly shows that when Eric first wore this red CCM jersey the John McCauley memorial patch was sewn onto the right shoulder, but was removed by the team after only a few games and was re-attached instead to the left shoulder, remaining there for the entirety of the season. The patch was removed by the team at season’s end, with the outline of the patch completely visible on the left sleeve, along with a faint outline of the patch on the right. The patch is also visible in the photo material included.
It should also be mentioned that according to the Generals team staff, only one home and one away jersey was made up for Eric when he first arrived mid-season. The number 88 was not a team-issued number, so the Generals took an old stock CCM white example along with a CCM red, and recycled the 8’s from other unused jerseys. In one of the photos provided, you can actually see the faint outline of the old numbers beneath Eric’s “88”. Eric’s jerseys also differed from the rest of the Oshawa examples, as Eric’s featured a smaller CCM logo and no CHL patch, while the rest of the team had larger CCM logos and a CHL patch.
