Canada’s oldest athletic organization, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was formed in 1881. Producing both Stanley and Grey Cup winning teams, the association’s importance cannot be overstated. This lot contains a number of MAAA piece’s including a few relating to hockey, along with other neat vintage hockey items. We have a cigarette case presented to a team member by the 1921 MAAA hockey team, four MAAA award spoons from the late-19th century to the late teens, and an MAAA stick pin from 1904. We also have an extremely rare 1912 Oshawa hockey ribbon, a 1932 St. Moritz hockey pin, a pair of figural hockey lighters, a winged skate pin with 1942 attachment and more!
Also included is a vintage generic hockey player pin, and a generic stick/skate pin. The breakdown for the offered items is as follows. 1) 1912 Oshawa hockey team ribbon. At approx. 2” x 8”, the bright green silk ribbon features “Oshawa” with “Intermediate O.H.A. Hockey Team 1912”. Despite some fraying along the top and bottom borders along with three fold lines, the ribbon displays in beautiful high grade. 2) Cigarette case presented by the MAAA hockey club to one of their teammates. At roughly 3 ½” x 4 ½”, the case features an engraving along the back that states “Presented to Russell H Read as a token of friendship and esteem by his teammates on the MAAA Hockey Club Jan 28/1921”. The front has the recipients initials, with the case suffering from a number of dents and dings along with tarnish and discolouration. The interior also exhibits heavy wear with staining. 3 & 4) MAAA spoons. Both matching spoons are 4 ¾” and feature the MAAA logo topped by crowns. Both sterling, the reverse features “Won by G.A. Forbes 7.3.03” on one, and “Bowling G.A. Forbes 499 Dec. 3-98” on the other. 5 & 6) MAAA spoons. Both matching spoons are roughly 4 ¾” and feature the MAAA logo with an arched top. Both sterling, one has “Green 2-9-18 438”, with the second has “1915-16 F.B. Whittet 523”. 7) Memorial Cup spoon. At 5” with hallmarks on the reverse, the front features a monogram with “Memorial Cup 1927 B.S. Davis 23 5 1927” below. 8) MAAA stick pin. At 3”, the pin features the MAAA logo topped by a crown. Sterling, the back has F.J.A. Bacon Season 1904”. 9) St. Moritz hockey pin. An embossed generic player is pictured with “St. Moritz 1932”, while the reverse has “Paul Kramer” along with other text. 10) Generic hockey pin. A winged skate with hockey stick is attached by chain to a small pointed attachment with “42” in blue enamel. 11) Generic hockey pin. A player skates with the puck along a bed of zirconias. The gloves have been painted yellow, the pants black, with no markings on the reverse. 12) Generic hockey pin. A pair of beige hockey sticks (possibly bakelite) have a pair of hanging skates attached, with rust along the pinback. 13 & 14) Hockey lighters. Matching 2” lighters with a gold-coloured panel featuring a generic hockey scene. Both were produced by Fisher with their mark on the underside of each. Most of the items remain in good condition, with wear commensurate with their former use. This includes tarnish, chips, marks, scratches and light staining/discolouration.
