Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Originally the third benefit game conceived to raise money for the families of fallen stars, the Babe Siebert game took place on Oct 29th 1939 at the Montreal Forum. This lot contains a rare program for the event, along with an NHL All-Stars 1939 team crest. The contest itself featured the Canadiens taking on a group of NHL all-stars managed by Art Ross, who included Brimsek, Shore, Coulter and Busher Jackson. The program pictures a full-colour image of Siebert on the cover, with a 25-cent purchase price. The accompanying vintage crest is like the examples worn on the All-Stars jerseys, with information from our consignor stating that this crest was actually pulled from one of the participants sweaters.
The 9” x 12” program exhibits a number of condition issues, with the front cover detached and the back cover no longer present. The cover also shows heavy wear, with toning, creasing, staining, foxing and edge tears. The interior is complete including the center line-up page, with the same issues as the cover present including toning, staining, creases and surface wear. The staples also show moderate rusting. The All-Stars crest features orange felt over black, with the letters cut away from the orange felt. At roughly 9” x 9”, the crest remains in excellent condition, with some age cracking to the felt mostly along the tips. The outer black edge of the felt has also been trimmed away.
