The only World Series win for Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators, the 1924 Series would go seven games and would see at least seven combined runs a game (except for Game 6). Despite being outscored 27-26 in the seven games along with six less hits, the Senators would score two runs in the eighth inning of Game 7 off a Bucky Harris ground ball with the bases loaded to tie the game. In the bottom of the twelfth with men on first and second, Earl McNeely hit a ground ball that skipped past Freddie Lindstrom bringing in Muddy Ruel for the Series winning run. Game 7 was also noteworthy as the longest game seven by innings in World Series history. In this lot we have a pair of 1924 World Series programs with a Game 1 example that’s been scored, along with an unscored program for the Polo Grounds.
The Game 1 program measures 6 ¾” x 10”, and it features an image of Senators manager Bucky Harris presenting President Calvin Coolidge with the Series opening ball. With just a few creases and some general toning to the front and back covers along with an edge tear, clear tape has been applied to the spine to keep the covers attached, with both staples intact. The interior, which features numerous individual photos, remains unmarked and fairly clean. The unscored Polo Grounds program is 9 ¼” x 11”, and it features both Series managers in portrait cameos. The program has a vertical crease while the spine exhibits light wear, with both staples rusty, but intact. The interior pages are starting to become detached from the center and are slightly brittle just at the staples, otherwise they remain supple and problem free, other than the odd crease or surface mark. Overall, each program remains in good condition, with nice display value. The Giants became the first team to play in four consecutive World Series, winning in 1921–1922 and losing in 1923–1924. Their long-time manager, John McGraw, made his ninth and final World Series appearance in 1924.
