Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

A strategic battle representing both the “inside” game that was played throughout the deadball era, against the “power” game that was brought about through significant rule changes and aided by Ruth, the 1921 World Series would be the first of 40 Series appearances for the Yankees. Facing the always dangerous NY Giants, the Series was closely contested going eight games, with the Giants prevailing for their first Series win since 1905. Meeting again the following season in the second-ever Subway Series, the Yankees wouldn’t fair as well, unable to manage a single win off their crosstown rivals going down in 5 games (Game 2 ended in a 3-3 draw). This enabled skipper John McGraw to win his third and final World Series. This lot contains programs for both the 1921 and 1922 World Series, with the 1922 example scored for Game 1.
At 9 ¼” x 11”, the 1922 program features images of both combatant’s managers on the cover in portrait cameos. A large vertical cease is present that runs through the publication which is very common, with a few other small creases on the cover and verso. The cover along with interior pages, remain firmly attached with both staples present. There is a small tear along the bottom of the spine, along with a small thumbnail size amount of paper loss to the back cover. Scored in pencil for Game 1, the interior exhibits areas with light toning. Identical in size and design to the 1922 program, the 1921 program is unscored, and exhibits a number of flaws including a large vertical crease that runs through the publication, along with a large tear at the bottom of the back cover. There is also a tear along the spine from the base to the bottom staple, while the center spread is currently detached. The interior is fairly clean with the odd crease, mark and areas of light toning. Despite these flaws, the program displays well as the catalog imagery will attest.
