Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
The 1920 World Series would be the first for Cleveland, and they would be facing a strong Brooklyn club led by skipper Wilbert Robinson. Noteworthy for the only triple play in Series history, along with the first grand slam to take place in a Fall Classic, this would also be the last time two previously non-winning clubs would do battle in the Series until 1980. Brooklyn was able to win a pair of games despite being outscored 21-8 in the Series, with the biggest gap being 8-1 in the fifth game played at Dunn Field. With Brooklyn shut-out in the seventh and final game, the victorious Indians wouldn’t appear in the Series again until 1948. In this lot we have programs for Games 2 and 4, and they’ve both been scored. A 1920 program (issued for Ebbets Field) in superior condition sold at Robert Edward Auctions in 2012 for $1304.00.
The Game 2 program from Ebbets Field is 9 ¼” x 11” and it exhibits both a horizontal and vertical crease that run through the program from previously being folded, along with some additional creases and toning. There is a tear on the right hand side that’s been repaired along the reverse by clear tape, along with 2 large edge tears to the spine in the middle and bottom, as well as a few pencil notations regarding the game’s particulars. The interior remains fairly clean with some areas of light toning along with a pen notation on one of the pages. The program/scorecard for Game 4 at Cleveland is 5 ¾” x 8 ¾” and it exhibits issues, with tape that has been placed along the spine of the interior. The cover is currently detached and is brittle, with the back cover also showing a tape stain along with a large crease. There are also some pencil markings along the top of the cover that have been erased
